Excerpt

Auf Dem Mother

(JANUS HEAD 1 and JANUS HEAD 2 lie on the ground with her heads and necks protruding from the collar of the yellowed dress.)

JANUS HEAD 1: May I have the dress please?

JANUS HEAD 2: No.

JANUS HEAD 1: You make me sick.

JANUS HEAD 2: You're welcome.

JANUS HEAD 1: A part of me, the one that is most like you, knows the living can never collide with the dead. We can never meet in the link-all space to share anything, much less a dress. Another part of me, the one that is most like me, tells me that I want the fucking dress and I want to smell it and zip her into it and sleep next to her while she wears it and then one day I’ll want to burn it while she’s at the corner store buying milk.

JANUS HEAD 2: See, you…you are full of longing for things you don’t need. You can love her without having to burn. That is a thing you can do. Everyone wants to be an arsonist. For what? You want water to come out of her eyes so your tongue can drink and you want to set her on fire so your hands have something to do.

JANUS HEAD 1: I want it all.

JANUS HEAD 2: Well, yes, that’s the thing, isn’t it?

JANUS HEAD 1: I’ll wait for it, too.

JANUSE HEAD 2: The patient ones are always the most dangerous.
